Indian Squad for SA ODI’s- Analysis
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on 23rd December announced the Indian ODI squad for the 6 match series against South Africa, which is to be held in month of February in the Rainbow Nation. The Board announced the team keeping in mind the ICC World Cup 2019, the team looks preety setteled with a clear view of what roles the players will individually perform. The squad comprises of 4 Fast Bowlers, 2 All-rounders, 2 Spinners, 1 Wicket-keeper and as many as 8 Batsman. It is a 17 member squad and India’s main emphasis on this tour is to figure out two things; first is, who will be their back-up bowlers for Bumrah and Bhuvi, the second thing that need to be figured out is who will bat for India at 4, the 3 contenders for the spot are Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey and Dinesh Karthik with Kedar Jadhav taking up the 6th position because of his ability to keep the stumps and to bowl some crucial overs for the team. We also conducted a survey which showed that Shreyas Iyer is the preferred choice of the viewers for the 4th position due to his solid performance against Srilanka but he batted at no. 3 which is Virat’s Position but recently he played for India A at no. 4 and took the team to crushing victory over New-Zealand A by winning the final One-Dayer. The resulst of the survey:
The squad is well balanced and back-ups have been provided by the selectors for each player. Ajinkya Rahane will be the back-up opener, Shami and Shardul will be Back- up for Bumrah and Bhuvi with Axar Patel serving as back-up for Kuldeep and Chahal and finally Dinesh Karthik and Manish Pandey will be up as back-ups if Shreyas gets the nod for the first One-Dayer.
Also, Shami has been called back into squad after a long time and that is solely due to the nature of pitches which will be offered in South Africa and also keeping in mind the conditions in England will be similar to that in South Africa and also Shami’s extra pace will be key for India in South Africa if they opt to play him as the 3rd pacer instead of a spinner. Shardul has been given another chance to prove his worth and this pace attack is likely to be the one which will play for India in the World Cup barring Injuries.
Overall the Squad is a good blend of youth and experienced and the two players which missed out for this series are KL.Rahul and out-form Umesh Yadaav. But still it will be tough for India against South Africa if we take into account the past series.
