Ind vs WI, 1st ODI: Preview

Despite loosing against Pakistan in the fInals, India had a successful Champions Trophy campaign, with Shikhar Dhawan being awarded the Golden bat for amazing 338 runs in 5 matches at an average 67.60 with a strike rate of 101.81. Also, Rohit and Virat both scored 304 and 258 runs in tournament respectively, with both featuring in top 5 highest scorers of the tournament, Bhuvneshwar kumar featured in list of top 5 highest wicket taker with a total of 7 wickets with a best of 2 for 23 at an economy rate of 4.64. On other hand West Indies are coming in the series on the back of a drawn ODI series against Afganistan. With West Indies being placed at 9th position in the ICC ODI rankings, they desperately want to win against India in this series to keep their hopes alive for direct qualification in the 2019 World Cup as the cut-off date for the tournament nears.

On paper India look more balanced than West Indies, with India little bit in difficulty with the form of their frontline spinners and also Rohit and Bumrah will not be featuring in this tour as they have been rested. The team is also most same with just two changes Kuldeep and Rishabh Pant coming into the side for Rohit and Bumrah. Also India will be without a head coach in this series as Kumble resigned after the Champions Trophy as his term expired, so this poses a big challenge for the Indian captain Virat Kohli as it is speculated that a rift between Kohli and Kumble had led to the Coach’s outser from the setup.

Coming back to the match India is likely to field the same team which featured in the Finals of Champions Trophy with two forced changes, Rohit and Bumrah are likely to be replaced by Rahane and Umesh Yadav in the X1 with a chance of Jadeja being left out of the side in the favour of Kuldeep Yadav. Where as West Indies will likely field the same team which was selected for the final ODI against Afganistan.

The match is to be played at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad, the pitch is traditionally greener and helps the pacers a lot, its yet to be seen what kind of the pitch is being made as series against Afganistan had spinning pitches, so from my point of view win the toss and ball first, also the second match of the series will be played on same venue.
